Top 10 Burgers in South Florida – Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill

Number 3 on the list of Best Burgers in SF is Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill. I visited this place on April the 21 of 2011 and had a really good overall experience.

The restaurant is located on a shopping plaza, here is the link to their website.

Don’t know for how long this place has been open, but it gave me the impressions that the store was brand new, good decoration, comfortable seating, the wall menu was not easy to read or understand until I arrive to the register and they gave me a paper version of it. After I ordered, they provide me with a number and I went to their soda machine, there a waitress ask me if I want Ketchup, Mayo or Mustard and that they will take it to my table.

After 5 to 7 minutes the waitress arrive with my food and all of the sauces I ask before.

The Good:

– Great restaurant, feels like new
– Clean, bright, comfortable

The Bad:

– Nothing bad to say …

The Burger:

I order a 8oz BBQ Bacon Cheese with swiss medium rare, that comes with fries, tomato and lettuce on the side open bun. Normally I eat my food medium rare, and specially burgers because most of the time they overcook them a little bit so medium rare is normally medium, medium is normally medium well etc. This time the Burger was really medium rare going towards rare, at some point I feel like sending it back to the kitchen for a little touch up, but it was so good that I eat it like that. The burger and a soda cost $14

Overall Experience: 9 out of 10

Food: 9 out of 10

UPDATE: I’ve visited this place 2 times after my initial visit and I have to say this is definitely one of the best or maybe the best burger place in SF, their quality, friendliness and flavor are still top notch.

Top 10 Burgers in South Florida – Five Guys

This Franchise appears on the 10 best burgers of South florida at number 7, it is the only fast food joint that appears on the list, and personally I think it is not by coincidence.

I tried this place more than 10 years ago when I lived in Washington DC and loved it, at that time there where not that many stores so I did not visit them that much, after their franchise expansion they arrived to Miami around 2007, since then they are a hit with local and tourist alike.

Website link

This is one of those places that I crave for, every now and then I have to get a Five Guys burger, thank God now they have plenty stores to choose from in South Florida.

The Good:

– Fast
– Lots of toppings (all of them free)
– Lots of restaurants to choose from
– Well priced

The Bad:

– The Fries are to big for one person to eat
– Sometimes some of the stores are full and the tables are to close to each other

The Burger:

I start ordering the Regular Bacon & Cheese Burger with raw onions, tomato, ketchup, mustard and some fries. The taste is incredible, however I found out that the difference between the “Regular” burger and the Little Burger is just an extra patty, so after that amazing discovery I end up eating 2 Little Bacon Cheese Burgers and NO fries ( calorie conscious guy 🙂 ), to me it is easier to eat, less messy and more tasteful.

Overall Experience: 7 out of 10 (high for a fast food place)

Food: 8 out of 10

Top 10 Burgers in South Florida – Le Tub Hollywood

Number 9 on the ABC local10.com top 10 burgers places in SF is Le Tub. This place was for long time the top google search result if you where using the search engine for this, and actually that is how I end up in this place about 3 years ago.

You can visit their website here

After a disappointing first visit I actually went for a second time and my visit was actually worst then the first one.

The only good place about this place is the location on the side of the intracoastal waterways in Hollywood, so if you are lucky you get a nice water view table and can see boats, dolphins and manatees etc passing by.

Below the traditional good and bad

The Good:

– The views of the waterways

The Bad:

– Crowded, we have to wait 30 minutes to seat
– Bad Service, crappy plates and plastic cups
– If you want water, you get it yourself on a really old and disgusting cooler
– No credit cards
– The place is falling apart

The Burger:

Average one, Not many options on the menu, I order the Sirloin Burger (13 oz. ground top sirloin, seasoned, charbroiled, served on a bun with lettuce, tomato, onion). The flavor was good, but the patty is to big for the bun and makes everything a mess. The whole experience for me was bad, long time to seat, long time to get the burger, it was windy and the plates fly away, to me completely overrated. Price for the burger with cheese is $11.50

Overall Experience: 3 out of 10

Food: 6 out of 10

Top 10 Burgers in South Florida – Tobacco Road Miami

Related to my personal investigation of the 10 best Burgers in South Florida here comes my review of Tobacco Road, number 10 on the list.

This is a Miami classic place, when I work in Brickell I visit this place at least twice a month specifically for the burger lunch special, If I recall correctly this was the first place serving liquor in Miami millions of years ago.

Here is the link to their website

Regarding the Restaurant here are my comments:

The Good:

– The small but nice terrace, not pretty, not big but better than inside
– The lunch special was good, I think less than $10 for a burger, some small portion of fries and a soda

The Bad:

– Inside the restaurant is really dark, maybe because this is actually a bar
– The whole place is not that clean, at least does not look like that
– Small plastic cups for the sodas
– So so service.

The Burger:

Overall a good one, I always order the Cowboy Burger ( Cheddar Cheese, Grilled Onions & Basted with BBQ Sauce ), decent size, good flavor, so so meat. If this was my list this place will not be there. Well maybe I reconsider when I visit all the places and create my own list.

Overall Experience: 5 out of 10

Is Chipotle really healthy ?

You may be fooled by the organic promotions all over their Chipotle restaurants and ads, but to make the call of “healthy” we need to define what healthy means, at least my definition of healthy.

If healthy means eating food without pesticides, hormones and humanly grown animals then Chipotle is healthy.

If eating a 910 calories and 2080 mg of sodium ( 90% DV ) Burrito Bowl then the answer is NO, for a 2000 calories daily diet this is almost half of your allowed intake, and if you forget the chips (570 calories) and a non diet soda (200 calories) you are over 1500 calories in one meal.

Dont get me wrong, I love Chipotle, I love their food taste and flavor, I love that I can order my food with my iPhone and the Chipotle App and my co-workers have to do a long line ( maybe the 15 minutes standing in line will help them burn 5 calories ) , I just figured it out if I skip the chips, drink water and don’t have breakfast going there make sense 🙁

By the way here is Chipotle Nutritional info

http://www.chipotle.com/en-US/menu/nutritional_information/nutritional_information.aspx

And below if my Burrito Bowl setup.

Cilantro-Lime Rice 3 oz. 130
Black or Pinto Beans 4 oz. 120
Steak 4 oz. 190
Tomato Salsa 3.5 oz. 20
Corn Salsa 3.5 oz. 80
Cheese 1 oz. 100
Sour Cream 2 oz. 120
Guacamole 3.5 oz 150

McDonalds vs Five Guys

I know it tastes a lot better, but you need to be careful on the calories.

McDonalds Quarter Pounder with Cheese

Cholesterol 90 mg
Sodium 1190 mg

VS

5 Guys LITTLE Bacon Cheese Burger

And this is without toppings 🙁

Aspen / Snowmass Travel Tips

– Lodging

Timberline Condos (www.thetimberline.com)

Great location, just 150 feet from the slopes so pretty much ski in / ski out, Inside the unit the furniture, decoration and appliances are from 1991, but well maintained. (they upgrade one tv to lcd :))

– Food / Restaurants

Mezzaluna Restaurant (www.mezzalunaaspen.com) $$$

Nice place, nice pizza, the steak was really good although this is an Italian Place, don’t try the mac and cheese, they are not what you are expecting.

Matsuhisa (www.matsuhisaaspen.com) $$$$

After getting some recommendations from friends over FaceBook, we went to this trendy place and it was really good, I’m not a sushi fan, but everything was really good. Do not leave this place without having the Bento box

Mountain Dragon Chinese Restaurant $$

Average chinese food, this place is a pool bar and a restaurant at the same time, so looks like they make more money on the beers than the food, unless you are craving for chinese avoid it, you will have the same treat as your local all you can eat buffet put pricier

Piñons Restaurant (www.pinons.net) $$$$

Excellent place, great food & selection. Trendy place so make reservations first.

– Overall

Snowmass is an excellent place for intermediate skiers like me, great weather (although this is random), great trails, good lifts and mountain restaurants. The town of Aspen is a 15 minutes drive from Snowmass, and if you have the time / skills you can ski on the other 3 mountains with the same lift tickets, all of them no more than a 15 minutes drive.

This is one of the places that is on our “return list”
